»Kansas Youth Advisory Council 2011 Regional Youth Conference

»The Wichita's Promise Youth Council has been busy working on an anti-tobacco media project this spring with a grant from TASK.  Currently the students are trying to build their facebook fan page “I pledge to be tobacco free.”  The page highlights some of their media products and campaign activities.  If you have a facebook account we would encourage you to ‘Like!’ the fan page.  If you know of any teens who might want to check it out please pass this message along to them as well.  To find the page just search “I pledge to be tobacco free.”

»The Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom and Sedgwick County Extension 4-H will offer a special teacher in-service training event on July 21 from 8 am to 5pm at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center. 

Plant-focused learning labs that meet elementary standards for math, science and language arts will cover the life cycle of plants, germination, planting, growing, food production and soil science.  Registration fee of $35 includes ready-to-use lesson plans, Kansas Crop Educator’s Guideline book, classroom grow light and set of crop seeds, lunch and snacks.  Registration deadline is June 15, 2011.  Maximum enrollment is 30 teachers.  An information sheet and registration form are attached. »Every week during summer, CityArts offers youth art camps that give kids the chance to make new friends and have fun while they completing unique art projects centered around a specific theme. Each week has a different topic. Camps are offered in the morning and afternoon. Kids can participate in one session or make it an all-day event.

 »In addition to the weeklong youth summer art camps, CityArts gives parents the option of enrolling their children in more intense art classes that focus specifically on one area of study. These classes range from one day to eight weeks. CityArts is one of the only places to find a full lineup of art classes specifically geared toward Teens and their interests.

»High school students are teaching other students about the dangers of bullying. Students involved in the Student Leadership groups across the district acted out different bullying scenarios and how students can stand up for their classmates. They also shared statistics about suicide, teen runaways and other problems that can be caused by bullying. Click here to watch the video.
